BGS Offshore Bedrock 250k version 3.0

The BGS Offshore Bedrock 250k dataset contains vector data which reflects the offshore bedrock geological of the UK and some of its adjacent waters (the UK Exclusive Economic Zone, EEZ) at 1:250,000 scale. This comprehensive product provides a digital compilation of the paper maps published by BGS at the same scale, as well as, additional re-interpretations from regional geological studies. The composition, age and deformational history of the rocks underlying the seabed (bedrock) are important

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Offshore cable or wind-farm corridor desk study: regional bedrock geology along the route · Marine spatial planning screening of seabed bedrock lithology and structural features · Regional geohazard context for offshore developer scoping (not site-specific)
Audience llm-inferred
marine spatial planners · offshore developers · marine and offshore geologists · GIS analysts · civils and geotechnical engineers (desk-study screening)

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Not for local or site-specific geology · Mapping detail varies with data density (geophysical survey and well/borehole control) · Access constraints restrict reproduction; the page footer cites OGL v3.0 but the dataset-specific constraints apply · Updated as needed, with no fixed schedule
