The boreholes have been drilled by BGS, or by commercial or public bodies. The name of the borehole, its unique reference code and number (BGS_ID) and the type of material is provided. For some boreholes, multiple types of material are available. Details of the collection are held i

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Desk study: locate BGS borehole records and available core/cuttings near a site for ground investigation planning · Geotechnical reference: identify existing onshore borehole materials for foundation or civils design context · Groundwater and contaminated land baseline: find nearby borehole sources to support conceptual site models
Audience llm-inferred
geotechnical engineers · civils engineers · hydrogeologists · contaminated land consultants · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Spatial index only; detailed material records are held in the Borehole Materials Database, accessed via the BGS website · Use is at the customer's own risk; no warranty on accuracy or suitability · Reuse restricted by NERC copyright · Updated as needed, so currency of records is not fixed
