BGS Seabed Geology 10k

Seabed geology of the UK’s continental shelf, fine-scale maps providing detailed and accurate characterisation of the seabed geology, integrating substrate geology, structural geology and seabed geomorphology. Areas covered Anglesey, Bristol Channel, Dorset, East Anglia and Offshore Yorkshire. Mapping is based primarily on high-resolution bathymetry data produced by the UK Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP). Analysis and interpretation are further informed by secondary data and information resour

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
substrate geology (bedrock and superficial units dominant within the top 1 m below seabed) · structural geology (principal faults and folds at rockhead and seabed) · seabed geomorphology (physical morphology and interpreted geomorphic character)
Coverage docs-verified
Anglesey, Bristol Channel, Dorset, East Anglia and Offshore Yorkshire
Resolution docs-verified
Mapped at a scale of 1:10 000; should not be used at finer scales
Update frequency docs-verified
irregular
Formats docs-verified

Access docs-verified
Public web access via data.gov.uk; copyright vested in NERC, so reproduction or transmission needs prior permission from BGS

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Marine EIA desk study: regional seabed substrate and geomorphology context for nearshore schemes · Coastal outfall or cable route screening: regional seabed geology overview before site investigation · Coastal scheme baseline: seabed geomorphology context for the five mapped areas
Audience llm-inferred
marine and coastal engineers · environmental consultants · geologists · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Not for local or site-specific geology; seabed sediments can move and expose or bury hard substrate · Mapped at 1:10 000 and should not be used at finer scales · Covers only five named areas · Update frequency is irregular · Copyright restricts reproduction without BGS permission · NERC/BGS gives no warranty on accuracy or suitability for any use
