Bureau of Meteorology Atmospheric Regional Reanalysis for Australia - Version 1 (BARRA)
The Bureau of Meteorology high-resolution Regional Reanalysis for Australia (BARRA) is a high-resolution multi-decadal regional atmospheric reanalysis. The reanalysis provides information about surface conditions (such as temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, humidity, evaporation and soil moisture), information on multiple pressure and model levels, and information on solar radiation and cloud cover. The reanalysis suite is based on the Australian Community Climate Earth-System

Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Reconstructing past storm and rainfall events as case studies for post-event flood or drainage analysis · Long-term climate variability context for climate risk and flood risk assessments · Soil moisture and evaporation inputs for catchment water balance or hydrological modelling · Solar radiation and cloud cover inputs for environmental and energy-related assessments
- Audience llm-inferred
- hydrologists · flood consultants · drainage engineers · climate risk analysts · environmental consultants
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- Dataset is no longer updated, so it will not cover recent periods · Regional product is 12 km resolution, too coarse for site-scale analysis · 1.5 km subdomain products cover only four areas (South-West WA, South Australia, Eastern NSW, Tasmania) · Reanalysis model output, not direct gauge or station observations; validate against observations before use in design · Version 1 of the reanalysis; later versions may exist that are not covered by this entry
