Corrosivity Map for the UK

The dataset is a Soil Corrosivity Map for the U.K. based on the BGS DIGMapGB-PLUS Map. The creation of this dataset involves scoring the Soil Parent Material types for five different attributes that contribute towards the corrosion of underground assets. These are (i) high or low soil pH, (ii) general soil moisture, (iii) the likelihood that soil saturated and undergo periods of anaerobic conditions, (iv) the presence of sulphides and sulphates and (v) the resistivity of the soil parent material

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Screening buried cast iron or ferrous utility mains for replacement priority by ground corrosivity class · Desk-based ground corrosivity screening for pipe material selection on a new civils or drainage scheme · Corrosion-risk layer for asset management plans covering underground ferrous assets across a UK region
Audience llm-inferred
water utility asset managers · civils engineers · utilities and pipeline engineers · planners · geotechnical engineers

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Three-class categorical output (unlikely / may / likely), not a continuous corrosion rate · Scoring follows the CIPA/DIPRA cast iron rating system, so it is tuned to ferrous assets · Based on soil parent material mapping, so not site-specific; site investigation needed to confirm · Dataset reference date is 2011-10-10, so the underlying data may be dated · Licence unclear: dataset licence not set and reproduction restricted without BGS/NERC permission · BGS and NERC give no warranty as to the quality or accuracy of the information
