Crop Map of England (CROME) 2024

The Crop Map of England (CROME) is a polygon vector dataset mainly containing the crop types of England. The dataset contains approximately 32 million hexagonal cells classifying England into over 15 main crop types, grassland, and non-agricultural land covers, such as Woodland, Water Bodies, Fallow Land and other non-agricultural land covers. The classification was created automatically using supervised classification (Random Forest Classification) from the combination of Sentinel-1 Radar Satel

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
England-wide crop and land-cover context for FRA or drainage catchment baselines · Agricultural land-use screening for BNG habitat baseline and constraints mapping · Crop-type inputs for diffuse pollution or nutrient risk screening on catchment projects
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · ecologists · hydrologists · flood consultants · planners

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Automated classification; not field-verified per cell (results checked against survey data and visually validated) · Single growing season (Jan–Aug 2024); no multi-year or later-year coverage in this entry · Optical-imagery crop typing is affected by cloud cover, which the radar-based method is used to address · Download format for the polygon data is not stated in the docs
