Digital Great Britain coastlines (DiGBcoast v1.0): a dataset of the coastline position of Great Britain from 1984 to 2022 derived from publicly available optica
DiGBcoast v1.0, is a new supranational dataset documenting three decades of coastal change across Great Britain mainland (England, Scotland, and Wales) including the isle of Wight and Anglesey. This dataset has been produced using the publicly available optical Landsat-5,8 and Sentinel-2 missions over the period between 1984 to 2022 (38 years). It includes instantaneous waterlines and instantaneous tidally corrected to Mean Sea Level shorelines. DiGBcoast is made available to the public as free

- Coverage docs-verified
- Great Britain mainland (England, Scotland, and Wales) including the isle of Wight and Anglesey · 1984 to 2022
- Update frequency docs-verified
- Not applicable (metadata lists no scheduled update frequency)
- Access docs-verified
- Free and open interactive data per DOCS summary; access constraints: NERC/BGS copyright, reproduction requires prior permission of the copyright holder
Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Historical shoreline change assessment (1984-2022) for coastal erosion baseline in a flood or coastal defence study · Context for shoreline position and change in coastal planning or environmental impact assessment · Validation or comparison of site-specific coastline mapping against satellite-derived shorelines
- Audience llm-inferred
- coastal engineers · flood risk consultants · environmental consultants · GIS analysts · planners
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- Derived from optical satellite imagery (Landsat-5, Landsat-8, Sentinel-2), so accuracy depends on imagery and tidal correction · Access constraints restrict reproduction without NERC/BGS permission; the site footer's Open Government Licence v3.0 statement conflicts with this, so confirm the licence before reuse · NERC/BGS gives no warranty as to quality, accuracy or suitability; use is at the user's own risk · No scheduled update frequency; the dataset covers 1984-2022 only · Resolution is not stated in the docs
