DiGMapPlus Strength

The DiGMap Plus dataset is a series of GIS layers describing the engineering properties of materials from the base of pedological soil down to c. 3m depth (ie the uppermost c.2m of geology). These deposits display a variable degree of weathering, but still exhibit core engineering characteristics relating to their lithologies. The 'Strength' dataset covers England, Scotland and Wales and characterises the material lithology, and its strength (for field description purposes) as outlined in docume

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Preliminary ground model and material strength screening for foundation and earthworks design desk studies · Engineering geology desk study to inform ground investigation scoping and sampling plans · Standardising field descriptions of near-surface materials for geotechnical logging (BS5930 / Eurocode 7)
Audience llm-inferred
geotechnical engineers · civils engineers · engineering geologists · ground investigation consultants · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Describes only the uppermost c. 2m of geology (to c. 3m depth), not deeper strata · Strength is characterised for field description purposes, not as quantitative test values · BGS and NERC give no warranty as to accuracy or suitability; use is at the customer's own risk · Copyright restrictions on reproduction and transmission apply to the dataset · Dataset reference date (creation) is 2008-08-22, though metadata shows updates through 2026
