ECMWF IFS ENS - dynamical.org Icechunk Zarr

The Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) is a global forecast model developed by ECMWF. ENS is an ensemble configuration of IFS: 51 ensemble members in the medium range and 101 in the sub-seasonal (extended) range. IFS consists of a numerical model of the Earth system, which includes an atmospheric model at its heart, coupled with models of other Earth system components such as the ocean. The data assimilation system combines the latest weather observations with a recent forecast to obtain the be

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
15-day ensemble forecast inputs for weather-risk review of construction programmes and site works · Ensemble forecast context for short-range flood and surface-water risk checks on river-basin projects · Sub-seasonal ensemble outlook for extended wet or dry spell context in water-resources and drought reporting
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · flood consultants · water resources engineers · drainage engineers · GIS analysts · data scientists working with cloud-native weather data

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Global dataset, not UK-specific; 1.5 degree grid is coarse for site-scale work · Sub-seasonal (46-day) forecasts are at 1.5 degree resolution only · Forecast data, not observations; no historical archive dates are stated in the docs · Model variables are not listed in the docs; check variables in the Zarr store before relying on them · Translated to Icechunk Zarr by a third party (dynamical.org), so access depends on that provider's maintenance · Requires Zarr or Icechunk-capable tooling to read
