Environment Agency Potential Evapotranspiration Dataset

Potential Evapotranspiration (PET) is the amount of evaporation which would occur if there was an unlimited supply of water. This dataset represents Potential Evapotranspiration for well watered grass and is available either with an Interception element (PETI) or without one (PET). The dataset has been calculated from homogenised climate station data, gridded to a 1km grid. The dataset starts in 1961, is available on a water day (09:00 to 09:00 on the following day) timestep and is updated frequ

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Catchment water balance inputs for flood risk assessment and hydrological modelling · Drought and abstraction licensing baseline for evaporation demand · Groundwater recharge and SuDS water balance estimates using gridded PET
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · flood consultants · drainage engineers · water resources consultants · ecologists

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Potential rather than actual evapotranspiration: assumes well watered grass, not site-specific land cover or soil moisture · Gridded at 1 km from homogenised climate station data, so modelled rather than site-measured · Interception (PETI) variant is a separate download from PET · Distributed as annual ZIP archives; no API or MCP tool access in catalogue metadata · Attribution to Environment Agency required
