ERA5 Land hourly time-series data from 1950 to present

ERA5-Land is a reanalysis dataset providing a consistent view of the evolution of land variables over several decades at an enhanced resolution compared to the Fifth Generation of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis (ERA5). Produced by replaying only the land component of the ECMWF ERA5 climate reanalysis, it benefits from the same physical data-assimilation framework but runs offline at higher spatial detail (9 km grid) to deliver richer land-surface inform

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Antecedent soil moisture from volumetric soil water layers for flood and drainage baseline conditions · Long-term point rainfall time-series (total precipitation) for FRA or drainage calibration · Snow cover and snow depth history for winter hydrology and snowmelt assessment · Soil temperature and moisture context for geotechnical or ecological site assessments
Audience llm-inferred
flood consultants · drainage engineers · hydrologists · geotechnical engineers · ecologists

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Model-derived reanalysis, not direct observations; uncertainty generally grows further back in time · Returns the nearest grid point rather than interpolating to the requested location · Optimised for point time-series retrieval; not a bulk gridded download format · Land model is driven by ERA5 atmospheric forcing, so observations only constrain it indirectly · Catalogue entry has no auth recorded (auth: null); the CDS site shows Login/Register, so account access may be needed
