GFPLAIN250m: Global 250m Floodplain Dataset

The GFPLAIN250m includes raster data of Earth's floodplains identified using a geomorphic approach presented in Nardi et al. (2006, 2018). The 250m floodplain dataset is derived by processing the NASA SRTM Digital Elevation model gathered from [http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/](http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/), and in particular the 250-m SRTM version 4.1 DTM. The coding used for each continent and additional information are detailed in the metadata included in the GFPLAIN250m data repository. The elevatio

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Regional floodplain extent screening for FRA context in catchments above 1000 km² · Large-scale screening of floodplain and wetland habitat at risk for ecological constraint mapping · Combining floodplain extent with settlement datasets for high-level flood exposure screening
Audience llm-inferred
flood consultants · hydrologists · GIS analysts · ecologists · planners

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Documented as fit only for river basins with contributing area greater than 1000 km² · Not applicable to deserts or ice-covered regions · Derived from 250 m SRTM v4.1 DEM, so inherits SRTM elevation errors · Requires Earth Engine access; commercial use terms need checking before consultancy use · Catalogue bounding box runs from -56 to 60 latitude, so high-latitude areas are outside coverage · Metadata description is truncated in the catalogue entry; the full methods are in the external metadata repository
