Groundwater Flooding Susceptibility

The groundwater flooding susceptibility data shows the degree to which areas of England, Scotland and Wales are susceptible to groundwater flooding on the basis of geological and hydrogeological conditions. It does not show the likelihood of groundwater flooding occurring, i.e. it is a hazard not risk-based dataset. The data covers Great Britain in a consistent manner. It will be updated periodically (at least bi-annually) as the underlying datasets or the methodology to derive the groundwater f

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Regional or national land-use planning screening for groundwater flood susceptibility · Relative groundwater flood screening at catchment scale in FRA scoping, alongside BGS confidence data and local records · Context for deciding whether site-specific groundwater investigation is needed before drainage design
Audience llm-inferred
flood risk consultants · drainage engineers · planners · hydrologists · hydrogeologists

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Hazard (susceptibility) only, not likelihood or risk; not a risk-based dataset · Cannot be used on its own to indicate groundwater flood risk or to make planning decisions at any scale · Not for site-scale decisions; relative rather than absolute; intended for use at resolutions of a few hundred metres or more · Derived from inputs of mixed resolution; effective resolution about 50m · Dataset reference (creation) date is 2006-08; metadata update frequency asNeeded conflicts with the at-least-bi-annual statement · BGS gives no warranty of accuracy or suitability; use is at the customer's own risk
