Harmonized Sentinel-2 MSI: MultiSpectral Instrument, Level-1C (TOA)
After 2022-01-25, Sentinel-2 scenes with PROCESSING_BASELINE '04.00' or above have their DN (value) range shifted by 1000. The HARMONIZED collection shifts data in newer scenes to be in the same range as in older scenes. Sentinel-2 is a wide-swath, high-resolution, multi-spectral imaging mission supporting Copernicus Land Monitoring studies, including the monitoring of vegetation, soil and water cover, as well as observation of inland waterways and coastal areas. The Sentinel-2 data contain 13 U

Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Cloud-masked monthly median RGB composite for a catchment or site baseline · Water-extent mapping (e.g. NDWI from B3 and B8) for flood or inland waterway baselines · Vegetation and soil cover change mapping for BNG habitat baseline screening
- Audience llm-inferred
- GIS analysts · ecologists · hydrologists · flood consultants · planners
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- QA60 cloud polygons stopped being produced after Feb 2022; legacy-consistent QA60 is constructed only from Feb 2024, so cloud masking for Feb 2022 to Feb 2024 needs the MSK_CLASSI bands · Data is top-of-atmosphere reflectance, not surface reflectance; use COPERNICUS/S2_SR for Level-2 data · Values are scaled by 10000 and must be divided before use · Each product splits into several granules, each a separate asset, so mosaicking is needed for area-wide work · Commercial consultancy use needs Earth Engine terms beyond the free tier · Bands B1, B9 and B10 are 60 m, which limits fine-scale analysis
