HLS Sentinel-2 Multi-spectral Instrument Surface Reflectance Daily Global 30m v2.0

The Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) project provides consistent surface reflectance data from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard the joint NASA/USGS Landsat 8 satellite and the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard Europe’s Copernicus Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-2B, and Sentinel-2C satellites. The combined measurement enables global observations of the land every 2–3 days at 30-meter (m) spatial resolution. The HLS project uses a set of algorithms to obtain seamless products from OLI and MS

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Seasonal vegetation and habitat baseline mapping for BNG assessments using 30 m NBAR time series · Surface water extent and wetness change screening for flood risk assessment context · Multi-temporal land cover change monitoring for catchment or ecological baselines · Bare-ground and vegetation mapping for site investigation and earthworks planning
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · ecologists · hydrologists · flood consultants · environmental consultants · planners

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Requires AWS credentials for the controlled-access S3 bucket, although the registry lists auth as null · Known issues: unrealistically high aerosol and low reflectance over bright areas, snow, clouds and water; pixels below -0.2 set to -9999 · Fmask omission errors in water detection and cloud-shadow errors in areas of high relief, with HLSL30 issues before April 2022 · Scale factor and offset missing from some COGs; some granules have incomplete CRS information · Overpass UTC dates can differ from local dates in eastern Australia and New Zealand · Possible duplicate L30 granules; some May–July 2023 granules were removed for poor geolocation · Inconsistent snow reflectance between Landsat and Sentinel-2
