IWMI DIWASA Rainfed and Irrigated Cropland Map for Africa

A framework integrating the Budyko model has been developed to distinguish between rainfed and irrigated cropland areas across Africa. This expands on remote sensing land cover products available for agricultural water studies in Africa and thereby helps address the need for deeper insights into cropland patterns. Validation against an independent dataset revealed an overall accuracy of 73% with high precision and specificity scores. These results validate the framework’s effectiveness in identi

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Rainfed vs irrigated cropland screening for African water-resources and abstraction assessments · Agricultural water-use baselines for African basin studies, following the Awash basin example in the docs · Irrigated-area context layer for GIS-based catchment or land-use analysis outside the UK
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · water resources engineers · GIS analysts · planners

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Africa only; no UK coverage, so not applicable to terramcp.earth's UK-focused work · Overall validation accuracy of 73% against an independent dataset · No update schedule (Update Frequency None) · Spatial resolution, time span and file formats are not stated in the docs
