JRC Global River Flood Hazard Maps Version 2.1
The global river flood hazard maps are a gridded data set representing inundation along the river network, for seven different flood return periods (from 1-in-10-years to 1-in-500-years). The input river flow data for the new maps are produced by means of the open-source hydrological model LISFLOOD, while inundation simulations are performed with the hydrodynamic model LISFLOOD-FP. The extent comprises the entire world with the exception of Greenland and Antarctica and small islands with river b

What's in it
- Data offered docs-verified
- river flood inundation depth (m) for return periods RP10, RP20, RP50, RP75, RP100, RP200, RP500 · depth category per return period (GloFAS 100-year flood hazard static layer classes) · permanent water class mask · spurious_depth_category (RP10 small-channel flag)
- Coverage docs-verified
- Global, excluding Greenland, Antarctica and small islands with river basins smaller than 500 km^2
- Resolution docs-verified
- 90 m pixel (spatial); no temporal resolution stated
- Formats docs-verified
- Google Earth Engine ImageCollection (raster bands)
- Access docs-verified
- Google Earth Engine access (registration required); docs state no restriction on use or distribution; licence CC-BY-4.0 per entry metadata
Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Fluvial flood exposure screening: overlay RP100 and RP200 depth grids on site or catchment boundaries for FRA · Population and asset exposure estimates within inundation extent across return periods 10 to 500 years · Comparative fluvial hazard screening for development sites where no local model exists
- Audience llm-inferred
- flood consultants · hydrologists · GIS analysts · planners
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- 90 m pixels are coarse for site-scale or local drainage design · Excludes Greenland, Antarctica and small islands/river basins under 500 km^2 · Depths above 10 m may be spurious in small channels for RP10 (flagged by spurious_depth_category) · Requires Earth Engine access and JavaScript or Python EE code to use · Band structure changed in v2.1 versus earlier versions, so existing v1 scripts need updating
