LIDAR Time Stamped Point Cloud

The LIDAR point cloud is an archive of hundreds of millions, or sometimes billions of highly accurate 3-dimensional x,y,z points and component attributes produced by the Environment Agency. The environment agecy site specific LIDAR DSM and DTM Time Stamped Tiles gridded raster products are derived from the point cloud. The component attributes a point cloud contains can provide valuable additional information to supplement elevation and can enable the user to make bespoke raster products such as

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Bespoke canopy height model or intensity raster from the point cloud for ecological or BNG habitat baselining · Multi-year terrain comparison across survey dates for flood risk or channel change assessment · Point-level ground checks against design surfaces for civils earthworks or drainage strategy
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · flood consultants · drainage engineers · civils engineers · ecologists

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Classified ground points do not match the final manually edited DTM · Not every DSM/DTM tile has a matching point cloud due to historic archiving · Point cloud available only for surveys back to 2006 · Very large archive (hundreds of millions to billions of points) delivered in 5km zip tiles
