NASA IMERG - dynamical.org Icechunk Zarr

The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) is a NASA algorithm that merges precipitation estimates from the constellation of passive microwave satellites in the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission with microwave-calibrated infrared estimates and monthly gauge analyses to produce a global, gridded, half-hourly precipitation record. IMERG intercalibrates, merges, and interpolates these inputs onto a 0.1 degree grid spanning the TRMM and GPM satellite eras. These datasets

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Long-term sub-daily precipitation climatology for FRA catchments where local gauges are sparse or absent · Rainfall time series for calibrating or sense-checking hydrological models at catchment scale · Global or cross-border precipitation context for overseas water and civils projects
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · flood consultants · drainage engineers · climate and meteorological analysts

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Satellite-merged 0.1 degree estimates, not point gauge observations; local accuracy is not documented and may be weaker than UK gauge or radar data · Global dataset with no UK-specific tuning or resolution stated in the docs · Exact temporal coverage dates are not given in the docs · Early run is a near-real-time product and is generally less accurate than the Late run (general knowledge, not stated in the docs) · Maintained by a third party (dynamical.org) that translated the source data to Icechunk Zarr, so there is some maintenance dependency
