NASA TRMM Project

This is a new (GPM-formated) TRMM product. The equivalent old TRMM legacy product is TRMM_2H31. Version 07 is the current version of the data set. Older versions will no longer be available and have been superseded by Version 07. Estimating vertical profiles of latent heating released by precipitating cloud systems is one of the key objectives of TRMM, together with accurately measuring the horizontal distribution of tropical rainfall. The method uses TRMM PR information [precipitation-top heigh

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
TRMM PR monthly spectral latent heating (0.25° grid) · TRMM PR orbital spectral latent heating (one orbit, 0.25° grid) · TRMM PR orbital spectral latent heating (0.5° grid, GPM_3GSLH_TRMM) · TRMM PR calibrated received power (GPM_1BPR) · TRMM PR daily gridded rain statistics (GPM_3PRD) · TRMM PR L2 attenuation, sigma-naught, bright band, rain type, attenuation-corrected reflectivity and rain rate (GPM_2APR) · TRMM PR monthly gridded statistics and 5x5° histograms (GPM_3PR)
Coverage docs-verified
Land and ocean; gridded products cover 67S to 67N, with empty cells beyond ±40° latitude
Resolution docs-verified
Gridded products 0.25° x 0.25° (GPM_3GSLH_TRMM 0.5° x 0.5°); PR horizontal resolution 4.3 km pre-boost (before 7 Aug 2001) and 5.0 km post-boost (after 24 Aug 2001); orbit granules ~92 min
Formats docs-verified
HDF · HDF5 · NetCDF
Access llm-inferred
Open data on the AWS Open Data Registry, no authentication; licence Creative Commons BY 4.0 (from entry metadata)

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Tropical rainfall climatology for overseas catchment or water-resources studies · Convective versus stratiform rain-type context for storm-rainfall analysis · Daily PR rain statistics as a cross-check on gridded rainfall inputs in tropical hydrology
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · water resources engineers · climate and meteorological analysts · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Only Version 07 is current; older TRMM versions are withdrawn · Legacy TRMM products are superseded by new GPM-format products, so older workflows need migrating · The PR's sensitivity severely limits the CSH algorithm; it detects only precipitation-sized particles · Pre-boost (before 7 Aug 2001) and post-boost resolution, swath and sampling differ · PR calibration assumes Rayleigh fading, which may add a 1–2 dB bias · Gridded products are padded with empty cells beyond ±40° latitude · Registry text is duplicated and truncated, so check the product documentation before use · Tropical-focused satellite data with no UK-specific coverage (llm-inferred from scope)
