NOAA U.S. Climate Gridded Dataset (NClimGrid)

The NOAA Monthly U.S. Climate Gridded Dataset (NClimGrid) consists of four climate variables derived from the GHCN-D dataset: maximum temperature, minimum temperature, average temperature and precipitation. Each file provides monthly values in a 5x5 lat/lon grid for the Continental United States. Data is available from 1895 to the present. On an annual basis, approximately one year of "final" nClimGrid will be submitted to replace the initially supplied "preliminary" data for the same time perio

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
maximum temperature · minimum temperature · average temperature · precipitation
Coverage docs-verified
Continental United States · 1895 to present (monthly product)
Resolution docs-verified
Monthly values on a 5x5 lat/lon grid (monthly product); daily EpiNOAA product at county scale
Update frequency docs-verified
Monthly product: annual 'final' replacement of preliminary data. Daily EpiNOAA: preliminary updated every 3 days, scaled data replaced every three months
Access docs-verified
Free and open (NOAA NODD). No authentication. Attribution requested for unaltered data; no implied NOAA endorsement. AWS CLI access needs no AWS account

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Long-term monthly precipitation and temperature baseline for a US drainage or flood risk study · County-scale daily temperature and precipitation series for a US climate-change or environmental assessment (EpiNOAA) · Temperature trend analysis as a climate-adaptation design input for US projects
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · drainage engineers · environmental consultants · climate adaptation specialists

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Continental US only; no UK coverage · Coarse 5x5 lat/lon grid, not suitable for site-scale analysis · Preliminary data is replaced by final data annually; users must choose the correct data level · EpiNOAA daily product starts in 1951, not 1895 · Modified NOAA data may not be presented as unaltered NOAA data · No MCP tools or API; data is accessed as files in S3 buckets
