Ocean surface wave indicators for the European coast from 1977 to 2100 derived from climate projections

The dataset presents wave climate indicators based upon ocean surface wave parameters computed for a European-wide domain. This dataset provides an understanding of the European wave climate under the impact of climate change. It provides added value for various coastal sectors and studies such as port, shipping, and coastal management. The ocean surface wave field are computed using the ECMWF's Wave Model (Stand Alone WAM, SAW) forced by surface wind and accounting for ice coverage in polar lat

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Port and breakwater design: wave climate inputs for coastal structures · Coastal erosion and flood assessment: future wave climate under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 compared with the historical baseline · Event review: ERA5-forced wave conditions for past storms
Audience llm-inferred
coastal engineers · port and marine engineers · coastal flood risk consultants · climate adaptation planners

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Point data at coastal grid points (30 km), not full-domain gridded fields · Future scenarios rely on a single EURO-CORDEX member (HIRHAM5 downscaled from EC-EARTH) for wind forcing · Title states 1977 onward, but the docs give the historical period as 1976 to 2005 · Docs state no updates are expected
