Remotely Sensed Flood Estimates

The estimated flood extent is an un-validated raw product often processed rapidly to share with category one partners during an incident. You must refer to the limitations of the data when using this dataset. This dataset is a GIS layer which shows raw, unvalidated flood estimates, derived from a variety of remotely sensed data during a flood incident. These extents are best estimates based upon what can be seen in the image at the time of image capture. Remotely sensed imagery can be acquired u

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
remotely sensed flood extent estimates (raw, unvalidated) · per-extent attributes: imagery source, resolution, acquisition date · permanent water flag (OS OpenMap Local Surface Water) or flood estimate
Coverage docs-verified
England (ENTRY regions); docs extent lat 49.943° to 55.816°, lon -6.236° to 2.072°
Resolution docs-verified
Varies by sensor (optical generally shows more detail than RADAR). For RADAR at 10 m pixel resolution, minimum mappable unit is about 1000 m²
Update frequency docs-verified
irregular

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Compare raw observed flood extent with modelled or recorded outlines after a recent incident (pre-validation, indicative only) · Map where a recent flood incident inundated land near a site as context for a flood risk review (land, not individual properties) · Rapid overview of flooded farmland from RADAR-derived extents for an incident briefing
Audience llm-inferred
flood risk consultants · hydrologists · GIS analysts · planners

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Raw, unvalidated estimates; only items accepted into the Recorded Flood Outline records are added to this layer · Snapshot in time, unlikely to represent peak flood extent · Shows flooding to land only; not suitable for identifying whether an individual property flooded · Quality depends on sensor; RADAR minimum mappable unit about 1000 m² at 10 m pixels · Geometry may not match Recorded Flood Outlines for a given event · Updated irregularly, in parallel with Recorded Flood Outlines
