Risk of Flooding from Rivers and Sea

Risk of Flooding from Rivers and the Sea (RoFRS) shows the chance of flooding from rivers and the sea taking into account the presence and condition of flood defences. It is our main way of communicating flood risk from rivers and sea to the public through our ‘Check Your Long Term Flood Risk’ service on gov.uk. While flood defences reduce the level of risk they do not completely remove it. For example, water can flow over the top of the defence, or they can fail in extreme weather conditions or

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Flood risk screening of England development sites, including areas behind flood defences · Early-stage site selection and flood constraints mapping using likelihood bands · Flood depth exceedance mapping at 0.2m-1.2m thresholds for site layouts · Client-facing flood risk context comparable to Check Your Long Term Flood Risk
Audience llm-inferred
flood consultants · hydrologists · planners · GIS analysts · civils engineers

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Complex dataset; preview only available at certain zoom levels · Web Mapping service set to 1:50 000 scale; visibility depends on the client software · Probabilistic overall risk, not specific to an event or scenario · Flood defences reduce but do not remove risk; defences can be overtopped or fail
