Sentinel-1

[Sentinel-1](https://sentinel.esa.int/web/sentinel/missions/sentinel-1) is a pair of European radar imaging (SAR) satellites launched in 2014 and 2016. Its 6 days revisit cycle and ability to observe through clouds makes it perfect for sea and land monitoring, emergency response due to environmental disasters, and economic applications. This dataset represents the global Sentinel-1 GRD archive, from beginning to the present, converted to [cloud-optimized GeoTIFF format](https://www.cogeo.org/).

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Post-flood inundation mapping from SAR scenes to support flood risk assessment · Surface water and land change monitoring over a site or catchment for environmental baselines · Site monitoring when cloud cover prevents optical imagery from being used
Audience llm-inferred
flood consultants · hydrologists · environmental consultants · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
6-day revisit cycle limits temporal sampling for rapid change · Provides radar GRD imagery; SAR pre-processing and interpretation are required before use · Requires GIS or remote sensing skills and tooling to work with COG files
