Sentinel-1 SAR GRD: C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar Ground Range Detected, log scaling

The Sentinel-1 mission provides data from a dual-polarization C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument at 5.405GHz (C band). This collection includes the S1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) scenes, processed using the Sentinel-1 Toolbox to generate a calibrated, ortho-corrected product. The collection is updated daily. New assets are ingested within two days after they become available. This collection contains all of the GRD scenes. Each scene has one of 3 resolutions (10, 25 or 40 meters),

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Pre/post-event flood extent mapping from multi-temporal SAR backscatter for FRA evidence · Surface wetness and inundation screening for drainage or SuDS baseline studies · Multi-temporal backscatter change detection for land-cover or habitat change monitoring (BNG baseline support)
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · hydrologists · flood consultants · ecologists

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Date range conflicts within the docs: page summary says available to 2025-10-17, availability block says to 2026-10-16; verify current coverage before relying on it · Requires an Earth Engine account and is subject to Copernicus Sentinel terms; commercial licensing terms beyond the stated free-use categories are not given in the docs · Collection mixes polarisations, resolutions and instrument modes; mosaics need filtering to a homogeneous set of bands and parameters · Processed values are computed on the fly; the raw-power collection COPERNICUS/S1_GRD_FLOAT is updated faster · Revisit interval is 6 days, and new assets can lag by up to two days · Terrain correction uses SRTM 30 or ASTER DEM above 60 degrees latitude, where SRTM is unavailable · Angle band is an interpolated approximation, and band min/max values are estimates
