Shoreline Management Plan Policies
A Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) is a large-scale assessment of the risks associated with coastal processes and helps reduce these risks to people and the developed, historic and natural environments. Coastal processes include tidal patterns, wave height, wave direction and the movement of beach and seabed materials. The SMPs set the strategic policy direction for coastal management and identify the most sustainable approaches to managing the risks to the coast in the short term (Epoch 1 0-20 y

Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Screen a site's coastal policy context by identifying the SMP policy unit and its HTL/MR/NAI policy · Support coastal flood risk and planning constraint mapping by overlaying SMP policy units in GIS · Inform long-term (50-100 year) coastal strategy and sea-defence options appraisal for Welsh schemes
- Audience llm-inferred
- flood consultants · coastal engineers · planners · GIS analysts
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- Strategic, large-scale policy layer, not a site-specific hazard or flood risk assessment · Welsh coast only · No policy units in Wales are assigned Advance the Line (ATL) · Download file format is not stated in the docs · Based on second-generation SMPs; policies may change over the 100-year horizon
