UMASSD-FVCOM-GOM3-Hindcast

The Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) was used to simulate ocean water levels, velocity, temperature and salinity over a multi-decadal period (1984-present) in the waters of the Northeast US including the Gulf of Maine. The model was configured and run by the Dr. Changshen Chen, Director of the Marine Ecosystems Dynamics Modeling Laboratory in the School for Marine Science & Technology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The triangular mesh has a varying horizontal resolution

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Boundary water levels and tidal currents for coastal flood or scour screening of estuarine and open-coast sites on the US Northeast seaboard · Temperature and salinity context for marine outfall or dredge-disposal impact assessments in the Gulf of Maine · Hourly hindcast time series as a stand-in for missing observations when calibrating a coastal hydrodynamic model · Scripted extraction of point time series from the NetCDF/Parquet reference files for metocean statistics
Audience llm-inferred
coastal engineers · flood risk modellers · marine and estuarine scientists · hydrodynamic modellers

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Covers the US Northeast and Gulf of Maine only; no UK coverage · Model hindcast, not observations; accuracy depends on model configuration and has not been validated here · Saved output ends 2022-06-17, despite the 1984-present simulation description · No update schedule (update frequency None), so recency is not maintained · Requires NetCDF/Intake or kerchunk tooling for practical use
