USGS Landsat

This joint NASA/USGS program provides the longest continuous space-based record of Earth’s land in existence. Every day, Landsat satellites provide essential information to help land managers and policy makers make wise decisions about our resources and our environment. Data is provided for Landsats 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 (excludes Landsat 6). As of June 28, 2023 ([announcement](https://www.usgs.gov/landsat-missions/news/changes-coming-landsats-simple-notification-service-amazon-web-service)

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Multi-decade land and water-body change analysis for a site or catchment baseline · Historical wetland and floodplain extent comparison to support flood risk assessment · Habitat change detection for BNG baseline context · Land-use change evidence for drainage strategy or catchment studies
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · hydrologists · ecologists · planners · flood consultants

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Landsat 6 is excluded from the data · S3 bucket is Requester Pays, so downloads incur AWS charges to the requester · Resolution and time span are not stated in the docs · Previous SNS notification topic was replaced on June 28, 2023; pipelines using it need updating · Data access requires AWS CLI or SDK tooling and familiarity with cloud-hosted COGs/STAC
