Dimensionless hyetographs and statistics of annual-maximum rainfall events in Great Britain, from historical rain gauge records

This dataset contains over 72,000 event hyetographs associated with rainstorms that contain Annual Maximum rainfall (AMAX) values for durations between 5-min and 24-hr for a set of ~1,300 rain gauges in Great Britain. The record length and completeness varies on a gauge-by-gauge basis, the median record length is 19 years and the processed record ends in 06/2018. Note that a rainstorm may have a different duration to the associated AMAX value, e.g., a 24-hr AMAX total may be caused by an 18.25-h

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
event rainfall hyetographs (cumulative rainfall time series per storm) · AMAX rainfall totals for 5, 10, 15, 30-min and 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 24-hr durations · event summary statistics and associated AMAX totals
Coverage docs-verified
Great Britain (~1,300 rain gauges across England, Wales and Scotland) · Ends 2018-06-30; start varies by gauge (median record length 19 years)
Resolution docs-verified
Sub-hourly rain gauge observations (point gauges). Metadata lists 'Spatial resolution 10 metres', which is unclear for point data, so treat with caution.
Formats docs-verified
CSV · ZIP (whole-dataset download)

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Selecting dimensionless hyetograph shapes for design storm temporal patterns in drainage strategy work · Climatology of AMAX-causing storm durations at gauges near a site for FRA rainfall inputs · Analysing sub-daily rainfall temporal structure for flood and drainage model calibration
Audience llm-inferred
drainage engineers · hydrologists · flood consultants · civils engineers

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
Record length and completeness vary by gauge (median 19 years) · Processed record ends June 2018, so later rainfall events are not included · A storm's duration may differ from its associated AMAX duration (e.g. 24-hr AMAX from an 18.25-hr storm) · Multiple AMAX totals can be embedded in one storm, so events may overlap · Point gauge data only; no gridded areal coverage
