Gridded estimates of hourly areal rainfall for Great Britain 1990-2016 [CEH-GEAR1hr] v2
The dataset contains 1km gridded estimates of hourly rainfall for Great Britain for the period 1990-2016. The estimates are derived by applying the nearest neighbour interpolation method to a national database of hourly raingauge observations collated by Newcastle University and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). These interpolated hourly estimates were then used to temporally disaggregate the CEH-GEAR daily rainfall dataset. The estimated rainfall on a given hour refers to the rainf

- Free download under the Open Government Licence (OGL); bulk download via the EIDC datastore, with scripted (wget/curl) examples that use a Personal Access Token
Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Hourly rainfall inputs for urban drainage or sewer model calibration and event analysis · Historical hourly rainfall for flood event reconstruction at catchment scale · Screening estimate quality with the distance-to-gauge and design-storm flags before use
- Audience llm-inferred
- drainage engineers · flood consultants · hydrologists · climate and meteorology analysts
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- Temporal coverage ends 31 Dec 2016; no data after this date in this version · Hourly values are disaggregated from daily totals; where the nearest gauge is over 50 km away or records zero rain, a design storm is used and flagged · Interpolated estimates, not direct gauge observations, so local accuracy depends on gauge density · Scripted download examples need a Personal Access Token; no API or MCP interface is described · Entry is marked as version 2; the docs note this is the most recent version but are not explicit about future updates
