Gridded Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) using gamma distribution with standard period 1961-2010 for Great Britain [SPIgamma61-10]
1km and 5km gridded Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) data for Great Britain, which is a drought index based on the probability of precipitation for a given accumulation period as defined by McKee et al. (1993). SPI is calculated for different accumulation periods: 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 months. Each of these is in turn calculated for each of the twelve calendar months. Note that values in monthly (and for longer accumulation periods also annual) time series of the data therefore are likely to

Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Historic drought frequency and severity screening for water resources or abstraction licence reviews · Climate context for drainage or flood risk assessments using dry-spell history · Drought screening for agricultural or ecological impact assessments in GB
- Audience llm-inferred
- hydrologists · water resources engineers · environmental consultants · ecologists · GIS analysts
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- Monthly and annual SPI time series are likely autocorrelated · Data covers 1961-2012 only, so it is not current · Gamma fit uses L-moments because maximum likelihood failed in some isolated cases · Licence terms apply and the dataset must be cited · Scripted download requires a personal access token · No update frequency is stated
