High-resolution Global Multi-Index Drought (GMID) dataset, 1980-2024

Here, we present the Global Multi-Index Drought (GMID) dataset, which includes some of the most used and widely recommended standardised drought indices: the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Evaporative Drought Demand Index (EDDI), the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the Standardized Evapotranspiration Deficit Index (SEDI), and the Standardized Vapor Pressure Deficit Index (SVPDI). This dataset is available on a global scale covering 1-12, 18, 24, 48-month

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Historical drought and flash-drought baseline for regional water resources or drought risk screening · Long-term SPI/SPEI climatology for context when assessing dry-period severity at a UK-comparable scale · Comparing reference vs best-fit drought index versions for sensitivity checks in planning studies
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · water resources engineers · climate risk consultants · environmental consultants

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
0.1 degree global grid is coarse for small catchments and local site-scale work · Indices are derived from modelled/reanalysis-style inputs (MSWEP, GLEAM, MSWX), not gauge observations · Bulk download of approx. 111.8 GB only; no API or subsetting described in the docs · Annual update cycle means the most recent period may lag · Users must choose between reference and best-fit index versions
