Hydrological monitoring data from Coalburn catchment, Northern England, 1967-2022

Hydrological monitoring data for 55 years from 1967 to 2022 for the Coalburn catchment (1.5 km2). The catchment is located in Northern England within Kielder forest, Northumberland, and is the longest running forest research catchment in the UK. In 1972/73 the upland grassland was ploughed and planted with a conifer forest. The trees are now mature and around 30% of the catchment has been felled. From 1967 to 1993 a mixture of hourly and daily data is available and from 1993 onwards all the data

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Forest effects on river flow analysis for upland catchments using hourly precipitation and discharge (1993 onwards) · Calibration and validation of hydrological models with long-run precipitation, PET and discharge records · Assessing runoff response to forest felling and planting change as baseline evidence
Audience llm-inferred
hydrologists · flood risk consultants · water resources engineers · forestry and land management consultants

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Pre-1993 data mixes hourly and daily resolution · Catchment land cover changed (ploughed and planted 1972/73, about 30% now felled), which affects comparability over time · Early precipitation network reduced from 13 gauges to 4 in 1972; tipping bucket gauge only from 1992 · Weir replaced in 1991; discharge data before 1991 can be poor or missing · Automatic weather station has many gaps; infilled from Eskdalemuir, 45 km away
