Integrated Hydrological Units of the United Kingdom: Catchments
This dataset is part of Integrated Hydrological Units (IHU) of the UK, a set of geographical reference units for hydrological purposes including river flow measurement and hydrometric data collection. This dataset was derived from the Integrated Hydrological Terrain Model. A Catchment represents the full area upstream from a Section outlet, which is a cell upstream of a confluence of two watercourses with known names. While Sections do not overlap, Catchments can overlap because one Catchment co

What's in it
- Data offered docs-verified
- IHU catchment polygons (area upstream of each IHU Section outlet) · Hydrological reference units for Great Britain, derived from the Integrated Hydrological Digital Terrain Model
- Coverage docs-verified
- Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales); Northern Ireland not covered · from 2014-08-20; end date not given (shown as …)
- Formats docs-verified
- File geodatabase (gdb) · WMS (web map service)
- Access docs-verified
- Whole dataset downloadable as zip; WMS for GIS use; licence: Non-Open government licence (terms and conditions apply); no authentication
Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- FRA baseline: identify the upstream catchment area for a watercourse section · Catchment boundary overlay for drainage or flood study areas in GIS · Upstream-area context for selecting hydrometric or catchment inputs at ungauged sites
- Audience llm-inferred
- hydrologists · flood consultants · GIS analysts · drainage engineers
Limitations
- Constraints docs-verified
- Great Britain only; Northern Ireland not covered · Catchments can overlap because each contains the catchments of all upstream Sections · Licence terms apply (Non-Open government licence) · Publication date 2015-02-05; no update frequency stated
