Mean and variability of topsoil organic carbon concentrations across Great Britain at 1km resolution from an ensemble of eight digital soil maps

This dataset presents the mean topsoil (0-15 cm) organic carbon concentration (g kg-1) and measures of its variability at 1 km resolution across Great Britain. The mean and variability metrics were calculated from an ensemble of eight previously published digital soil maps applied to all 1 km grid cells across GB where data were available from all eight maps. Four of the maps were generated from the 2007 UKCEH Countryside Survey topsoil data, two of which are available online to use. Two maps ar

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
mean topsoil organic carbon concentration (g kg-1), 0-15 cm · standard deviation across the 8-map ensemble (g kg-1) · coefficient of variation (unitless) · signal-to-noise ratio (unitless) · name of map deviating most from ensemble mean · relative size of largest difference from ensemble mean (%) · largest difference expressed in standard deviations
Coverage docs-verified
Great Britain · c. 2007 (topsoil conditions reflected in most input maps)
Resolution docs-verified
1 km (1000 m) grid cells, OSGB 1936 / British National Grid

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Soil organic carbon baseline for land-use change or ecological assessments across GB · Topsoil carbon input with uncertainty bands for catchment or runoff modelling · Flagging 1 km cells where soil maps disagree, to target site-specific soil sampling
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · ecologists · environmental consultants · hydrologists

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Model-derived predictions, not field measurements; ensemble spread is not a formal confidence interval · Only cells where all eight maps have predictions are included, so coverage has gaps · Input maps span different periods; some use much older topsoil samples · Topsoil (0-15 cm) only; no subsoil values
