Modelled daily soil moisture and soil temperature at 1km resolution across the UK mainland, 1965-2018
This dataset contains model outputs of daily mean volumetric water content and topsoil temperature at 1 km resolution across the UK mainland for the years 1965-2018. The outputs are generated using neural network models trained on COSMOS-UK (cosmic-ray soil moisture) observational data. The data are presented in monthly NetCDF files on the British National Grid.

Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Historical antecedent soil moisture context for flood risk or drainage assessments · Topsoil temperature and moisture baseline for ecological or habitat condition studies · Long-run (1965-2018) soil moisture series for drought or groundwater recharge analysis at site scale
- Audience llm-inferred
- hydrologists · flood risk consultants · ecologists · GIS analysts
Limitations
- Constraints llm-inferred
- Modelled outputs from neural networks, not direct observations; uncertainty is not quantified in the docs · Model trained on COSMOS-UK sites only; volumetric water content above 90% and the Tadham Moor site were excluded from training · Ends in 2018, so it does not cover recent years · Description cites British National Grid but metadata gives spatial reference as WGS 84; confirm CRS before use · Scripted download needs a personal access token
