Multi-tier archetypes to characterise British landscapes, farmland and farming practices

This dataset consists of landscape and agricultural management archetypes (1 km resolution) at three levels, defined by different opportunities for adaptation. Tier 1 archetypes quantify broad differences in soil, land cover and population across Great Britain, which cannot be readily influenced by the actions of land managers; Tier 2 archetypes capture more nuanced variations within farmland-dominated landscapes of Great Britain, over which land managers may have some degree of influence. Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Stratifying catchment or site-scale land-use and soil context to support flood risk assessment inputs · Selecting representative 1 km landscape archetypes for ecology or agri-environment baselines · Characterising farm-management context in England and Wales for catchment mitigation or land-use planning options
Audience llm-inferred
ecologists · planners · hydrologists · GIS analysts · environmental consultants

Limitations

Constraints docs-verified
No Tier 3 archetypes for Scotland, because several agricultural management input variables were unavailable · Tiers are analysed separately and not as a nested structure, so a Tier 3 archetype can sit in more than one Tier 2 archetype · 1 km grid cells are coarse for site-scale work
