National Coastal Erosion Risk Management (NCERM)

The National Coastal Erosion Risk Management (NCERM) map shows the spatial NCERM coastal baseline. This baseline is split to 'frontages'. These are defined as lengths of coast with consistent characteristics based on the cliff behaviour characteristics and the defence characteristics. It is intended as an up-to-date and reliable benchmark dataset showing erosion extents and rates for three periods from a base date of 2005: - Short Term (0 - 20yr i.e. 2005 to 2025); - Medium Term (20 - 50yr i.e.

Resolution llm-inferred
Frontage-level: coast split into frontages of consistent cliff and defence characteristics; no numeric resolution stated

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Screening coastal erosion exposure for Welsh site and development appraisals using the 2025 short-term extents · Long-term (2105) erosion setback context for coastal flood and erosion risk assessments · Checking SMP2 policy and defence type along a frontage for shoreline management and planning inputs
Audience llm-inferred
coastal engineers · flood risk consultants · planners · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Extents are based on 50%ile confidence; the 5-95%ile range is only in the attributes · Results are scenario-dependent (no active intervention vs SMP2 policies) · Wales only · No scheduled updates, so maintenance risk over time · Download format is not stated; only WMS is listed in the docs · Dataset reference date (2023-06-29) predates the 2026 update
