NOAA High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) Model

The HRRR is a NOAA real-time 3-km resolution, hourly updated, cloud-resolving, convection-allowing atmospheric model, initialized by 3km grids with 3km radar assimilation. Radar data is assimilated in the HRRR every 15 min over a 1-h period adding further detail to that provided by the hourly data assimilation from the 13km radar-enhanced Rapid Refresh.

The HRRR ZARR formatted data was originally generated by the University of Utah under a grant provided by NOAA. Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Historical convective rainfall and storm-event reconstruction for flood risk assessment (archive since 2014) · Near-term weather context for site works and construction programme planning · Atmospheric model inputs for climate or weather sensitivity studies on non-UK projects
Audience llm-inferred
flood consultants · hydrologists · GIS analysts · environmental consultants · climate data analysts

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Covers the USA domain only; not UK data · Model output, not observed rainfall or river level · Zarr archive is maintained by University of Utah, not NOAA; data queries go to atmos-mesowest@lists.utah.edu · Attribution required for unaltered NOAA data; modified data must not be presented as original · Large archive; access requires familiarity with AWS S3 and GRIB2/Zarr tooling
Licence
NOAA data disseminated through NODD are open to the public and can be used as desired.

NOAA makes data openly available to ensure maximum use of our data, and to spur and encourage explorati
