Sentinel-2 Global Mosaics

The mosaics have four bands of data (Red (B04), Green (B03), Blue (B02) and wide band Near Infrared (B08)). First, cloud masking based on the scene classification layer of the Sentinel-2 level 2 algorithm was applied, then for each pixel and band, within three-month time periods, the first quartile of the distribution of the pixel values was taken as the output value to filter out any bright pixels misclassified as not clouds. If there are no valid pixels for the given timeframe, the pixel is le

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
Sentinel-2 cloud-masked, cloud-filtered reflectance mosaic: red (B04), green (B03), blue (B02), NIR (B08) · Per-pixel count of valid observations
Coverage docs-verified
Global · From 2020-01-01, open-ended
Resolution docs-verified
10 m spatial (gsd 10); composites built over three-month periods
Formats docs-verified
GeoTIFF (cloud-optimized) · STAC JSON (collection and items, GeoJSON for items)
Access docs-verified
Licence 'other': Copernicus Sentinel data legal notice. Asset access uses CDSE authentication: OIDC for HTTPS, S3 credentials for S3 (CREODIAS S3 is requester-pays). No API key in entry.

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Cloud-free regional basemap for site context in planning and FRA or drainage reports · Land-cover context and rough vegetation/NIR screening for ecological baselines (e.g. BNG habitat context, not final habitat mapping) · Large or persistently cloudy study areas where single-scene imagery has gaps
Audience llm-inferred
GIS analysts · Ecologists · Planners · Environmental consultants

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Composites over three-month windows, not individual scenes, so not suited to event-scale or fast-change analysis · Pixels with no valid observations in a period are left empty · Quartile-based compositing suppresses bright pixels but may not match scene-level reflectance · Licence 'other' means the Copernicus legal notice must be checked for reporting use · Entry lists auth as null, but assets require CDSE OIDC or S3 credentials · Only four bands; no SWIR or red-edge bands
