Soil near-surface properties, vegetation observations, land use and land management information for 1800 locations across the Thames catchment, UK, 2018-2021
This dataset contains information about soil near-surface physical and hydrological properties, vegetation observations and land use & management information across the Thames catchment (UK). It was collected during the ‘Landwise' project's ‘Broad-scale field survey' which sampled 1836 location points across a total of 164 fields/land parcels. The aim of the survey was to quantify the impact of innovative land use and management on soil properties, with implications for natural flood management.

What's in it
- Data offered docs-verified
- soil dry bulk density (0-50 mm) · volumetric water content (0-50 mm) · soil organic matter (loss on ignition) · derived soil porosity · particle size distribution and texture class · vegetation maximum and minimum height · soil surface condition and vegetation type observations · aggregate stability (slaking and dispersion), hand texture, HCl calcareous test · VESS score (subset of locations) · land owner land use and management questionnaire responses · field contextual observations (slope, surface water, erosion or deposition)
- Coverage docs-verified
- Thames catchment, UK · 2018-01-01 to 2021-12-31
- Resolution docs-verified
- Point samples; location coordinates degraded to nearest 1 km grid point (spatial resolution 1000 m)
- Update frequency docs-verified
- One-off survey; sampling undertaken once during 2018-2021

Useful for
- Use cases llm-inferred
- Near-surface soil bulk density and porosity inputs for natural flood management (NFM) runoff assessments in the Thames catchment · Land-use-specific soil water content and infiltration-related baseline for drainage strategy or FRA evidence · Field-level land management context (arable, grassland, woodland) for catchment-scale soil condition appraisal
- Audience llm-inferred
- hydrologists · flood risk consultants · drainage engineers · soil scientists · land management advisers
Limitations
- Constraints docs-verified
- Limited to the Thames catchment sample; not national coverage · Single sampling event, so no time series · Coordinates degraded to nearest 1 km grid point · Organic matter by loss on ignition is an estimate · Derived porosity with organic matter relies on an assumed particle density · Secondary classifications of free-text responses depend on analyst interpretation · Field teams had varying expertise (see SurveyStaffCode) · Anonymised: farm and field names removed
