Surface temperature, surface oxygen, water clarity, water chemistry and phytoplankton chlorophyll a data from Esthwaite Water, 1945 to 2013

This is a long-term monitoring dataset of surface temperature, surface oxygen, water clarity, water chemistry and phytoplankton chlorophyll a from weekly to fortnightly sampling at Esthwaite Water in Cumbria, England that began in 1945 for some variables. The data were initially collected by the Freshwater Biological Association but have been collected by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) and its predecessor Institute of Freshwater Ecology since 1989. What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
surface temperature (TEMP, °C) · surface oxygen saturation (OXYG, % air-saturation) · Secchi depth (SECC, m) · alkalinity (ALKA, µg/l as CaCO3) · pH · ammonium (NH4N, µg/l) · nitrate (NO3N, µg/l) · soluble reactive phosphate (PO4P, µg/l) · total phosphorus (TOTP, µg/l) · dissolved reactive silicon as SiO2 (SIO2, µg/l) · phytoplankton chlorophyll a (TOCA, µg/l)
Coverage docs-verified
Esthwaite Water, Cumbria, England (single lake) · 1945-04-01 to 2013-12-31
Resolution docs-verified
Single fixed point (buoy at deepest part of lake); weekly to fortnightly sampling; water samples integrated 0-5 m

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Long-term lake water quality baseline for ecological or water quality impact assessments in the Lake District · Nutrient trend context (TOTP, PO4P, NO3N) for eutrophication risk assessments · Temperature and oxygen reference series for lake climate-change impact studies
Audience llm-inferred
ecologists · hydrologists · environmental consultants · water quality scientists

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Single lake only (Esthwaite Water); not transferable to other waterbodies without caveats · Data end in 2013 and do not cover current conditions · Weekly to fortnightly sampling, so short-term events may be missed · On some occasions samples were taken from the shore and not integrated over 0-5 m (flagged as Flag 2) · Licence terms apply; citation required in publications
