Topsoil visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectral data from the UKCEH Countryside Survey, Great Britain, 2018-2019

The dataset contains information about the visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) reflectance spectra collected from re-quartered reserved fine earth (FE) soil samples obtained during the 2018-2019 Countryside Survey. Out of the 481 samples collected during the survey, only 451 were used for diffuse reflectance spectroscopy due to sample availability. Diffuse reflectance spectra were gathered from 451 samples using the ASD AgricSpec spectrometer and from 306 samples using the FOSS DS2500 spectromet

What's in it

Data offered docs-verified
Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectra (350-2500 nm) of topsoil fine earth samples · ASD AgricSpec spectra (451 samples) · FOSS DS2500 spectra (306 samples) · 23 OSSL-predicted harmonised soil parameters
Coverage docs-verified
Great Britain · 2018-01-01 to 2019-12-31
Resolution docs-verified
Spectral resolution of 1 nm (visible, 350-780 nm) and 0.5 nm (near-infrared, 780-2500 nm), per the docs' 'respectively' wording; per-sample tabular data with no spatial resolution stated

Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Regional topsoil property baseline for soil-condition inputs to BNG habitat or land-use assessments · Training or validation data for Vis-NIR spectral soil prediction models in site investigation or contaminated land work · Comparing OSSL-predicted topsoil properties against measured values for GB soils in a desk study
Audience llm-inferred
ecologists · geotechnical engineers · environmental consultants · soil scientists · GIS analysts

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Only 451 of 481 survey samples have ASD spectra and only 306 have FOSS spectra · The 23 soil parameters are model predictions from the OSSL engine, not direct measurements · Predictions were compared against measured values for only 12 soil matrices · Tabular per-sample data; no spatial detail beyond Great Britain is stated · One-off 2018-2019 survey with no stated update schedule
