Unified peat map for Wales

An updated map of peat extent for Wales has been developed by the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, with support from the British Geological Survey and Natural Resources Wales in support of the Glastir Monitoring & Evaluation Programme, commissioned by the Welsh Government. This map represents a considerable advance on previous attempts to map the deep peat resource of Wales and yields a significantly larger estimate than that based on the Soil Survey of England and Wales alone. Useful for

Use cases llm-inferred
Peat constraint screening for drainage and earthworks appraisals on Welsh sites · Probable deep peat flagging (45 cm+) ahead of ground investigation scoping · Peatland and lowland peat baseline for biodiversity net gain or nature-based solutions appraisal in Wales · Peat presence layer for planning constraints mapping in GIS
Audience llm-inferred
geotechnical engineers · civils engineers · ecologists · GIS analysts · planners

Limitations

Constraints llm-inferred
Stated spatial resolution of 10000 metres is too coarse for site-scale use · Only peat at least 45 cm thick is captured; shallower peat is not represented · Combined from mixed-source layers (BGS, Forestry Commission, CCW/NRW surveys) so not a single consistent survey and not a site-level ground survey · Publication dated 2020, so may not reflect recent land-use change · Non-open licence with mandatory attribution on derived products · Shapefile download only; no API or MCP interface
